Pedro J. Santa-Sánchez

Pedro J. Santa-Sánchez received his bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Puerto Rico and his law degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Puerto Rico Law School. He was a member of the University of Puerto Rico Law Review from 1974 to 1975 and an Associate Editor from 1975 to 1976.

Mr. Santa-Sánchez was admitted to the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico in 1976; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 1977; the US District Court for the District of Puerto Rico in 1979; the US Court of International Trade in 1983 and the US Supreme Court in 1985.

After working as a law clerk to Judge Juan R. Torruella of the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico from 1976 to 1979, Mr. Santa-Sánchez joined O’Neill & Borges, a San Juan full service law firm, where he headed the Litigation Department for 20 years. His practice covers commercial and civil litigation in trial, appellate courts and administrative agencies, as well as commercial arbitration. He has acted as litigator and legal advisor in a wide range of civil, commercial and trade regulation matters, including antitrust, unfair competition, false advertising, trademark/trade dress infringement issues, Puerto Rico Dealer’s Act and Sales Representatives Act, U.S. Automobile Dealers’ Day in Court Act, health law, products liability and defense of tort and mass tort claims, complex litigation, securities, admiralty, creditor rights and related commercial areas. He has been lead counsel and counsel of record in a high number of cases, including many published decisions.

Mr. Santa-Sánchez has served as court appointed member of the following organizations: Puerto Rico Board of Bar Examiners, 1983 to 1986; Bar Examination Committee for the U.S. District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, 1982 to 1998; Advisory Committee on Rules for the Court of Appeals for the First Circuit 1989 to 1991; and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group for the District of Puerto Rico, 1991 to 1993;

Chambers and Partners has listed Mr. Santa-Sánchez in its directory of the World’s Leading Lawyers for Business (2006, 2007 and 2008) and in its Client’s Guide of Latin America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. He has been described by Chambers as "one of the country’s best litigators" and a "brilliant strategist".
